Walkway Repair

Restore your brick walkway

Uneven bricks? We can fix it, often making it look like new.

Concrete paver walkways can last for many years or decades with very little maintenance, but when things go wrong, we can help.

One of the big advantages of concrete paver walkways is how easy they are to fix, compared to a poured concrete slab. Broken or stained bricks can be swapped out for new ones. Even the entire base underneath the walkway can be fixed because we can simply remove the bricks on the surface to get relatively easy access to what's underneath.

If your walkway needs work, we can help you diagnose the problem and come up with a cost-effective repair plan.

Brick Walkway Repair FAQs

Brick walkway repairs are usually between $13 and $25 per square foot. The cost-per-square-foot only includes the area that actually needs repairing, not the whole walkway. If only 40 sq ft of a much larger walkway has sunk down, the repair might be $520 to $1000.

Costs can vary widely depending on the size, location, and condition of the walkway.

Yes! One of the great things about concrete pavers is that bricks can be swapped in. But one or two broken bricks are usually not an issue at all. A cracked paver, while being imperfect, may not affect the strength of the walkway. As long as it is locked in place with sand, it will still be structurally sound and it may not be worth the effort to replace it. If it's not part of a larger repair project, it's rarely worth the cost to have us come down and change a single brick.

If your walkway uses a brick style that's still being made, we can match it exactly. If your walkway uses an older brick style, we still might have them in our supplies – perhaps left over from a previous project we did years ago. Some bricks, such as those zig-zag Unistone pavers, were so common 30 years ago that it's possible to find exact matches on Facebook Marketplace or Kijiji. Failing all that, it's usually not a problem to find a way to make a repair look beautiful and natural even without an exact match.

Usually we can fix up a walkway in just a day or two of work. The exact length of time depends on the extent of the repair, of course, but usually they are really quick.

There are a few reasons some areas of your walkway might have sunken and other areas haven't. 1. Uneven compaction: If the sub-base wasn’t compacted evenly during installation, it may settle more in some spots over time, 2. Naturally inconsistent subsoil composition, 3. Poor drainage: If water is allowed to pool under part of the walkway, maybe because of a slope or a clogged downspout, it might gradually wash away fine particles underneath, 4. Organic material under the base: If there were roots, buried wood, or even topsoil left under the base when it was installed, those materials can break down or compress over time, causing dips to form.

If you have an older walkway that is still solid and level, but has become weedy, we can absolutely get rid of the weeds. Weeds grow when there is soil in the joints between bricks. The long term solution is to remove the bricks, clean them up and put them back together using new polymeric sand in the joints. Read our guide on dealing with patio and walkway weeds to learn more.
